5 ways to reduce the cost of your car insurance

A standard comprehensive policy now costs an average €900 a year, but there are things you can change that may help you get cheaper car insurance from Top Insure. Such as fitting approved security devices, to parking in a secure garage. These are some things that can reduce the cost of your car insurance.

The car type you drive

Consider a car with a smaller engine. Insurance companies view more powerful cars as higher risk as they drive faster and are more at risk of serious accidents. Powerful cars are also more expensive so are very costly to repair or replace.

Add a named driver

Did you know that adding your spouse or partner to your policy can actually reduce the price you pay. If they have more driving experience or drive your car occasionally it reduces the risk.

Increase your voluntary excess

Often your policy excess is set low to around €300. If you are willing to increase this to pay a higher amount in the event of an accident you can decrease your annual policy price by a small amount.

Car security

Most cars come with engine immobilisers but you can also have a car alarm fitted, park your car in a garage, install a GPS tracker or fit a steering lock to reduce the risk of your car being stolen.

No claims bonus

The biggest savings you can make to your car insurance is by adding years to your no claims bonus. Every year reduces your policy and add up to a significant discount after a few years. Safer driving equals cheap insurance.
